Faust
A quintet of musicians from the Scottish Ensemble and DJ Alex Smoke perform Alex Smoke’s 2011 score for this expressionistic 1926 version of the classic cautionary tale of the deadly consequences of entering into self-destructive deals with the devil.
Alex’s music, lauded by the house and techno communities, is also informed by his early experiences as a boy-chorister at Durham Cathedral. Still drawing on his classical music training gained as a teenager, Alex now tours his sets which blur the boundaries between electronica, classical and hip hop across the globe, including to the prestigious Sonar Festival in Barcelona.
A talented cellist, Alex’s new score exploits the full express range of the string family layered with electronics providing unusual atmospheres and textures.
